Astec Conveyors supply parcel delivery service with a reversible sortation system

4-Oct 2013 - Press Release

With strong growth in e-commerce driving demand for strategically located distribution depots, a leading UK and International parcel delivery company relocated its existing Preston depot to a new and larger facility and appointed Astec Conveyors to design and install a cost effective conveyor system to meet their present and future requirements.

Astec Conveyors designed a reversible materials handling system for the routing of incoming deliveries that includes large parcels down to small jiffy bag items. These are off-loaded on to one of four 6m long telescopic boom conveyors that extend directly into the 40ft trailers to provide a speedy and ergonomic way to offload with minimum manual handling.

In order to service the raised dock area, Astec Conveyors designed and manufactured a steel walkway and raised platform, supplying the telescopic conveyors on hydraulically adjustable chassis in order to accurately position the boom within the vehicle.

Incoming parcels are fed via the telescopic conveyors onto decline belts which merge onto a 9m long central spine fitted with Intralox’s ARB™ modular plastic belting. This was selected as the belt surface is ideally suited to support the application of manual sortation and diverting of parcels onto three individual conveyor lanes for off-loading into Roll Cages.

The conveyor system is designed to run in reverse, with van collections being off-loaded on to the spur conveyors and transferred to the ARB unit for manual sortation to one of four inclined belts that feed via the telescopic boom conveyors into the vehicle trailers.

The system was successfully installed earlier this year and has been operating reliably and efficiently.
